The Darker Side of Casinos

Casino

The modern casino is similar to an indoor amusement park, but for adults. The focus of these casinos is gambling, and games of chance like poker, roulette, and blackjack provide billions of dollars in annual profit for U.S. casinos. Some casinos offer restaurants, hotels, and shopping malls as well as entertainment events. The term “casino” derives from the Italian word “casino,” meaning little house. Early casino games such as blackjack, roulette, and craps are still among the most popular in casinos today. Nonetheless, there is also a darker side to the casino experience.

Casino security begins on the casino floor. Employees keep an eye on all games and patrons, ensuring that no one is trying to cheat. Dealers are often the first to notice a suspicious patron. Table managers and pit bosses also keep an eye on table games, monitoring betting patterns and other possible cheating. All of these employees have higher-ups monitoring their behavior. If one employee seems out of place, the casino security team is often able to identify the problem before it can cause harm.

However, not all casino patrons are good at playing casino games. In fact, many players are superstitious and may even change dealers after they have an unlucky streak. Changing dealers might make the player feel worse because the new dealer is well-trained in tricks to make the game “cool” for the players. If the player feels a new dealer is skilled in cheating, he may feel like the casino is trying to change his luck by putting him in the casino to “win” a game.
